Monthly Bill Organizer
My husband and I had both lived on our own for several years prior to getting
married. When we were first married it was a challenge to come up with a way to
pay our bills in a timely manner that we both agree upon. At the job I had at
the time I was paid once a month. Because of the once a month pay check I wrote
all my bills on the first of the month. I kept them in a monthly bill organizer
in a drawer next to the telephone. I did not have many bills at that time in my
life so this simple system worked well for me. At that time my husband worked a
job in which he was paid every other week. He had his bills organized so that he
paid half of them the first of the month and the other half in the middle of the
month. He also had a monthly bill organizer, however he also had a system of
writing the due dates on the outside of the bill’s envelop so he would know when
to pay the bill.
When we were married we agreed that the bills should be kept in a monthly bill
organizer. The disagreements began with where to store the monthly bill
organizer. I wanted to keep it in a drawer in the small built in desk that our
apartment had. The telephone was on this desk so it seemed like a logical place
to pay bills. My husband felt that the monthly bill organizer should sit on top
of the desk so that we would have the constant reminder to pay the bills. I
argued that I did not want the bills sitting out in the open for everyone that
came over could see. My husband argued that if they were shoved in a drawer we
may forget to pay them. The monthly bill organizer made many trips in and out of
the drawer. When I would walk past the desk area and see the monthly bill
organizer sitting on top of the desk I would put it in the drawer. When my
husband noticed that it was not on the desk he would pull the organizer out of
the drawer and place it back on top of the desk. This location battle went on
for several months. Finally I noticed that I was not putting the organizer away
as often. There were times when my husband would place a new bill in the
organizer and then leave it out on the desk, but this was infrequent. We have
moved several times since that first year in the small duplex. Our bills have
changed as well as the methods to make payments, but we still have a monthly
bill organizer that we put the bills in each month. My husband still writes the
due dates on the envelopes and I still store the organizer in the drawer.
